The vampires dress like goths because it amuses them to, as far as I can tell. That, and a lot of them started life as people who assume vampires dress like goths, maybe.
Also, it is a TV show.

I only started really liking it when I started to consider it a comedy. Like, every time you see a vampire or a werewolf or any random bullshit, assume that the terrible ideas and characters are really them trying to deconstruct and make fun of some stupid stock characters. (I hesitate to call them archetypes, since I don't know if smelly biker vampire or lassie werewolf are really deeply ingrained in our psyches) The show continuously discredits everyone.
I have to give them some credit, HBO shows are rarely irredeemably unintelligent. Also, have you seen that opening sequence?

Ok... with all this talk I downloaded the first season to give this beast a try.
I have tried 3 times to watch the first episode... and I just can't do it.
This is just about the most poorly written show I have ever seen... ever.
The first time I got about 3 minutes in (up the the hick vampire with the spring loaded fangs) before I shut it off in disgust.
The second time I got up the the bar before the southern accents overwhelmed me... like nails on a chalkboard.
The third time I got up to the confrontation in the parking lot and just couldn't stomach the terrible writing/acting.
I tried it. I hate it... with a passion.

I don't watch "tv" either. I consider tv to be composed almost entirely of advertisements. |

It is.
And yes, I would prefer a bad, expensive HBO drama to a middling-to-good comedy any day of the week. |
