Far more than 1% actually. I was making a salad last week that called for this guy. Turns out a little salt shaker-sized bottle of it costs $15. A lot of spices are actually very expensive.

Seriously? It was like $3-4 for a bottle that's lasted us several months so far (and kallie really likes cardamom cookies).

Yep. I checked two different stores.

I never said that at all, nor did I imply it. Mostly my point was that was a lot of work for beans.

As for spices, it's just like many things. The initial investment is very high, since each one is at least several dollars and there are dozens. Also I eat very few different things and it is almost never worth it to me personally to add a bunch of spices. I'm just not focused on cooking or food in any way.

$10 will easily get you a lot of garlic powder, paprika, and cayenne. You don't actually put saffron in many things, and so there's probably no need to stock it.

And I would do what with those things? I have no need for them.

Indeed? I just eat a lot of the same things and those spices you listed have not much benefit. The only place that spices would even come in to play would be whatever chicken or steak that I happen to eat each day, I guess.

Well, the mexican spice section in my grocery store does not have epazote, and neither does the spice store. Oh well.

Christina's in Inman is a good spice store. But I'm a plebeian, so I just get spices at the grocery store.

They also have Turkey flavored ice cream around thanksgiving. And flower favored ice cream. Mmmm.

As far as spices, there's also that Indian spice place in Central sq. Don't know much about it, though.

Yeah, my main issue with foodies is the pretense, not the hobby per se. Ice cream that tastes how flowers smell is awesome though, imo.

The Indian place does have a lot of spices, mostly in whole flower/pod/seed form. Christina's is better and cheaper though.

Also their ice cream is the best ice cream I've ever had, and you don't have to deal with dirty hippies with holes in their ears like you do at Toscanini's.
