Has anyone ever cooked with epazote before? I'm making some black beans and was just going to go with cumin, cilantro, garlic, onion, cayenne, and bay leaf but word on the street is epazote is the way to go.

Never tried it, and it seems kind of hard to find.

I'll check the spice shop the next time I'm down there (which might actually be really soon).

Is it insensitive to call both of you cooking fags? Not that there's anything wrong with that.

So, it turns out that the spice shop is not only better than the grocery store, it's cheaper, too.

I guess. They're just beans. Are you cooking them for something other than just yourself?

Nope. I'm making enough so there will be leftovers for when Katie comes over tomorrow, but even when she thinks I am cooking for her I'm really cooking for me.

So, it turns out that spices actually make things taste better. Sometimes a lot better.

I know all of this. I guess I just don't like black beans. Or Mexicans throwing cups of vomit at Americans. Even if those Americans are soccer players.

It puzzles me why you think that they're not worth adding 1% to the price of food.

Far more than 1% actually. I was making a salad last week that called for this guy. Turns out a little salt shaker-sized bottle of it costs $15. A lot of spices are actually very expensive.

Seriously? It was like $3-4 for a bottle that's lasted us several months so far (and kallie really likes cardamom cookies).
