Were the arts of writing and characterization developed, unbeknownst to me, between 1994 and 1997?

I guess that explains the release of the first Wheel of Time book in 1990...

I also didn't say that Final Fantasy VI is better than Final Fantasy VII, nor did I say its characters are more fully developed. Obviously they are not. If I was going to play a game today I would probably play FFVII, of the two. Maybe they didn't fully flesh out Gau's motivations for all of his actions but that doesn't make the game bad. It doesn't even make the game middling. The game is good. 7/10? With FFVII a 9/10?

Is that 7/10 like King Arthur is 7/10? Because that's not very good...

I really think DOOMCom is about a decade too late there.

I think DOOMCom is a decade too late everywhere.

I said King Arthur was a 5/10. Having sort-of watched it again I would change that to a 4. So...no.

Where did you get a 7?

FFVI has plenty of emphasis on characters to move it along. It's not just about characters. It's about the whole package.

Yeah, but if 30% of the satisfaction of the game is only rated at 20%, that's a substantial loss of quality.

And I'd put RPGs at:

Characters: 30%
Plot: 40%
Mechanics: 30%

That's way too low for that game. Have you played SNES RPGs? They can be a lot more brutal than FFVI. You're just judging it too harshly.

If you want character development play Super Mario RPG.

I wouldn't go any higher than 4/10 for characters.

Super Mario RPG really is the gold standard by which to measure other SNES RPGs. Or really any game in general.

Either you're serious or you've never played it. It really is fantastic.

I've actually been playing Paper Mario lately. It's pretty fun. But anything related to the characters or plot is painfully tedious.

I'm 98% serious. I mainly still can't get over how good that game is.

Not only that but it is still good and still looks good. I feel the same way about Kingdom Hearts, that it's just inexplicably good when compared to what you might think going in.

Paper Mario of any kind is also good.

Why is it that good? I don't disbelieve, it's just been a while since I played it, so I could use a reminder.

Gameplay and characters. And it's freaking Mario in an RPG and somehow it works. Shock value alone sucks you in.

It's really, really fun, and reasonably funny. Most of the time JRPG humor falls flat for me, but this one brought me some giggles back in the day.

Don't know, need to replay to provide a critical analysis. I suppose I like how the story flows without any tedious bits. Combat is reasonably interactive. The system is pretty shallow and doesn't get in the way.
