The original Halo was good. I've played all three.
That trilogy was the biggest letdown in the world. The story was terrible. They tried to build it up as an amazing masterpiece, and it was just awful.

Both, kind of. The first two books weren't that impressive, but I consider the entire Halo machine to be terrible if the primary component of it is.

I can't really quickly summarize the story of the game, partly because it didn't make sense and partly because they didn't explain anything (probably because there was no way for it to make sense). I could go into more detail, but don't have the time at the moment

They had grand ambitions, especially in the way they developed the ARGs and books and other outside-game canon.
But the games as the primary product completely failed to deliver on that promise, so I don't plan on buying whatever random crap they attempt to market under the IP.
