So I went to Dunkin' Donuts to get a cup of coffee because they offer it in a larger size than Starbucks now, and I can order it with a name that is in English (although at Starbucks I just say "large" and make them convert that into their nonsense system). Because it's 8 pm, the place is empty and they probably get 1 customer every 15 minutes. The woman was understandably upset that I was disturbing her nap. She asked me if I wanted cream and sugar. I said, "just cream." She said, "just cream?" I said, "yes, just cream."

And of course, I look at it as she's putting the lid on and it's black as night. What did I get? Just sugar.

Maybe Vernon is right.

To be fair, "just cream" is a terrible decision. She was trying to help you out.

I guess I should have asked this before wasting time typing a dubiously witty response:

Right about what?

He thinks that employees in the food service industry no longer take pride in their work (as indicated by asymmetrically sliced sandwiches, burnt crepes, that kind of thing) but that they should.

Because your coffee will taste terrible.

Honestly, think Vernon's observation is somewhat limitis absent in most industries. Pride in one's work is absent in most industries. For example, I asymmetrically slice my macros all the time because I can't take pride in being the only one in my company capable of critical thinking.

This is fairly inaccurate in the following ways:

1) I never said that this applies only to the food service industry.
2) I never said that such employees should take more pride in their work; just that they would be better humans were they to do so.

That woman is paid the same hourly wage regardless of whether she makes good (or accurate) coffee or not. She is an unskilled laborer and her only hope of promotion is to one day become the shift leader of that Dunkin Donuts, which probably doesn't pay much more than her current job. Therefore, she might as well conserve her energy and give terrible service, because picking on other people makes her feel better about herself.

Now imagine a country full of people with a same mentality. You know what you get? Russia. Fuck that place.

We are trending towards a society when most people are completely divorced from the administration of their jobs and have no motivation to take pride in their work. I think a lot of this comes from both having no reward when the business does well (and thus no selfish desire to help it do so) and not having any ability to make meaningful decisions (which is rather dehumanizing).

It's sort of the nature of the beast with corporations. I get stock options and all that crap, but even that is barely any incentive. My work (almost) never has a direct effect on those numbers, so it's no really any motivation.

The question is, can we do anything about it? Probably not.
