Science already says we can't use more renewable energy? Science says we can't have electric cars? Science says we can't build things to last longer to reduce consumption?

I'm going to do my best to not champion this movement since I don't support all of it, but seriously?

Science says we can't come up with an alternative to insurance, a "service" which produces no real commodity and only serves to interact with a flawed system? Science says we can't come up with an economic model that doesn't involve rewarding people who already have way more than they need by taking away from people who don't have enough?

I mean, I don't know about all of that, but Sadoway would back me up on the electric cars at least.

I think that science does say that.

None of those things exist today. In your magic Star Trek world where you can just scoop materials from a nebula then use a replicator, then a fake economy can work.

Unfortunately our world doesn't have magic cars that run on sunshine and rainbows and unicorns.

At least we have cars that run on garbage; thanks to Mr. Fusion:

Scientific advancements improve life, but we have those things improving our lives within the economic framework that we live in now. I'm not really sure what this has to do with capitalism being bad.

Yeah... there's a lot of dirty hippie QQing going on around here... and I just can't support that.

Anyone want to take a look at the original post? This is why we can't have nice things.

It really is. I think we should all reflect.

Speaking of Star Trek, young Kirk's hair so was blond as opposed to not-blond. Who's with me?

Calm down.

Is there some awkward phrasing or mistaken grammar in that statement? I'm not sure what she's trying to say.

Are you saying this guy:

has blond hair?

The actor:

So they bleached the tips of his hair or something. Not-blond.

I am calm.

Heh. Mostly the awkward grammar I think. My contention is that in the new movie, the Kirk character has blond hair. (And relatedly, that Kirk in the original series is blond as well). Vernon disagrees.

So yeah: between blond and not-blond, I have to go with blond for this one:

Is there a reason for your long-standing inability to distinguish colors?

I guess I'll just bow out here so I don't have to try and convince people that goods manufactured to last longer and reducing consumption will effect a capitalist economy. Or, you know, that electric cars and solar power exist.

I'm gonna go with brown on Kirk.

Are you saying there's some conspiracy such that significantly better products are not available? If electric cars existed and were good, there would be one parked within a block of my apartment. There isn't, and they don't.

I don't think anyone is saying that energy is not a problem and that having more effective things wouldn't make stuff better. All I'm saying is that capitalism is not a problem, and you can't design a system based on people not being selfish...because they are. Do you doubt for a second that most people in Star Trek-land wouldn't be sitting on their asses playing Diablo 37 or whatever Blizzard's most recent title will be in 2603?

Yep.

All I am saying is that any of the improvements you are going to mention can and will naturally occur if they are meant to within the structure of the system already in place. Give it time.

I think this is really the key issue, here.

I think the real issue, beyond rampant color-blindness, is the fact that Senior House scrubs are stealing food from homeless people. You can't get much lower than that.
