Is it just me, or is it really odd that they are cancelling the show as a new movie based on the same IP is being released? Wouldn't you think that'd be, you know, good for them?

This is very common. At least in the comic book world with DC.
Right after The Question got popular because of Justice League Unlimited, they got rid of him.
Also, right after Batman really reached the height of his popularity after The Dark Knight, they effectively killed off Bruce Wayne. |
